The Municipal Garden

The Municipal Garden of Chania was created during the last years of the Turkish period to cover the need of the citizens for an open space and a green area to take a walk, relax, and escape from the crowded neighborhoods within the city walls. The creation of the garden was the work of Reouf Pasha, who supervised its development.
The garden was designed in 1870 according to European standards, and it was the first public work of the city of Chania that could be used by all citizens. The garden includes mostly evergreen trees and a variety of flowers.

Since its foundation, the garden has always been the main recreational public area of the city where locals gather to enjoy their free time. The garden has also hosted various exhibitions, events and establishments, including the first exhibition of Chania in 1900.
The building at the center of the garden has hosted the Cretan Parliament, and later it was used as a theatre and as a coffee shop. In 1905, K. Manolikakis and D. Savakis rented the building and opened the first cinema of the city.
In 1918, the municipality hires an agriculturalist, K. Spais, for the renovation of the Garden. New beautiful plants are then planted in the garden. Nowadays, the picturesque paths offer pleasant walks within the green labyrinths of the garden, through the cooling shadows, the scents of aromatic plants, and the bright colors of the flowers.
