Civil Marriages
Civil marriages can be arranged at the City Hall of Chania, located on the street Kydonias 29, first floor, in the hall of the Municipal Council of Chania every Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday after 13:00 by the deputy Mayor.
In order to set the date of the marriage, the couple must submit a joint application and sign it before the service. According to the Gender Equality Law, the couple is obliged to declare the surname of their future children before the marriage. They can choose to declare the surname of the father or mother or even both, however, no more than two surnames can be declared.
During the ceremony, the groom and the bride must each be accompanied by an adult witness. The witness may be a relative, even of a first degree. The witnesses are obliged to hold their identity cards during the ceremony or their passports in case they are not Greek citizens.

CIVIL MARRIAGE TEXT
From this moment, you are united by the bonds of marriage on your own free will. From now on you owe each other love, faith, and respect for the rest of your lives. The bond of your marriage assigns you a common fate and the common responsibility to solve together, in equal terms, all the problems of your married life and life in general. Your common obligation is also to contribute to the needs of the family you will create, to promote and protect your family, each according to his/her abilities and skills. Finally, you have an equal obligation and right on the upbringing and education of your children, in order to help them become active and useful citizens and free personalities.
For the issuance of documents from the Register (Civil Marriage Office), please choose the document you need from the following list in order to get information on the submission processes and to download the original applications. The applications are submitted by the applicant (who must also hold his/her ID card or passport) to the corresponding service of the Municipality of Chania. Applications may also be submitted online, provided that the identification process of the user is completed. Thanks you.
