REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR THE ISSUANCE OF A CIVIL MARRIAGE CEREMONY PERMIT

FOR FOREIGNERS THAT RESIDE IN GREECE:

The Civil Marriage Permit is issued by the bride and groom separately at the Municipality or community where each applicant is registered. The necessary documents are also submitted to the Municipality or community where each applicant is registered.

1. Application (provided by the Municipality)
2. Birth Certificate translated in Greek by a Greek Consulate or Embassy.
3. A certificate from the applicant's consulate in Greece stating that they are not married in their country, translated in Greek and certified with the APOSTILLE stamp, if the applicant's country of origin is included in the Hague Convention.
4. Divorce decision for those who are divorced, translated in Greek
5. Death Certificate for those who are widows/ers, translated in Greek
6. A photocopy of the applicant's passport and residence permit (a civil marriage permit will not be issued if there is no residence permit)
7. A 15€ deposit, one for each permit  
8. Publication of the wedding announcement in a local daily newspaper for one day (a copy of the newspaper announcement must be submitted by each applicant), stating that:

« The groom (full name of the groom)... son of (full father's and mothers name).....born in (date of birth) and resides (place of residence)... and the bride (full name of the bride) daughter of (full father's and mothers name).....born in (date of birth) and resides (place of residence)... will have their wedding at the municipality of (name of the municipality) ......»

(Note: the newspaper announcement does not include the date of the ceremony. It only includes the name of the Municipality where the ceremony will take place.)

The Civil Marriage Permit is issued ten (10) days after the publication of the wedding announcement on a local newspaper and is valid for six (6) months. The civil marriage ceremony can be arranged in any Municipality of community in Greece or abroad.
