Civil Marriage Permit for Citizens of Foreign Countries

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS FOR THE ISSUANCE OF A CIVIL MARRIAGE CEREMONY PERMIT

 

FOR CITIZENS OF FOREIGN COUNTRIES:

The following documents must be submitted by the applicants by fax (0030 2821093300) or e-mail (dimos@chania.gr) in the Municipality of Chania:

  1. Birth Certificate translated in Greek by the Greek Consulate or Embassy, and certified with the APOSTILLE stamp, if the applicant's country of origin is included in the Hague Convention.
  2. Family Status Certificate translated in Greek by the Greek Consulate or Embassy, and certified with the APOSTILLE stamp, if the applicant's country of origin is included in the Hague Convention.
  3. Divorce decision for those who are divorced, translated in Greek
  4. Death Certificate for those who are widows/ers, translated in Greek
  5. A photocopy of the applicants' passport

Following their submission, the above documents will be checked and if there is no problem, the Civil Marriages Office of the Municipality will contact the applicants to set the date and time of the ceremony. The applicants must present themselves in the City Hall three (3) days before the ceremony with their passports, in order to fill in and sign the "Common Civil Union Application". The applicants must be accompanied by two (2) witnesses holding their passports or I.D cards the day of the ceremony.
